Loreto Customs

Loreto Customs (BW)

Date: April 11, 2013

I had nothing better to do than to wait. So I sat and watches the informal customs office deal with the passengers who came off the cruise ship. My nerves told me not to take the shot, but I did it anyway and suffered no consequences for it.

This was taken at Loreto, Mexico, which was selected as an alternative port after Matzlatan was the scene of a massacre engineered by the drug cartel.

We were running to get out of a storm when I stopped to take a photo of the flag. This man with a dirty, sweaty shirt passed by. I took the shot. It was not meant as a social comment.

I have mixed feelings about having taken this shot. On one hand, I think it is a fine composition. The unconsciousness of the man is contrasted by the indifference of those passing by. On the other, I can’t help but feel that I turned a living person into an object. Does this kind of photo help the homeless or does it make us more immune to compassion?

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Ah, the old digitals loved to leave artifacts.

National Palace, Mexico City

I was a little scared photographing these two guards at the National Palace in Mexico City, so I sneaked up very quietly and took the shot.

The National Palace is not only the capitol of Mexico, but also the location of a broad expanse of murals by Diego Rivera, husband of Frida Kahlo.

I used my second digital camera to take this shot — a Samsung Digimax 130.

Now and then you are treated to a truly glorious display of light. The only thing to do is get out your camera and record. This winter’s day gave me one of those opportunities. I pulled out the Nikon D60 and created the framework for an HDR treatment of the scenery.

This was created using the Hockneyizer at Big Huge Labs.

As Spring progresses, my anticipation for the blooming of the Matilija Poppies begins to grow. The huge white flowers were considered for the state flower of California but lost to the brilliant, orange California Poppies. You see them along the roadside and in creek beds or on rocky hillsides.

Signatures of Light #2

Signatures of Light #2

I spent the winter experimenting, mostly with a technique called “Intentional Camera Movement”. This is what it sounds like: you take the camera and move it around.

This particular image was creating as we were driving home. The jerks were creating by the vibrations of the car and my attempting to sign my name using the traffic lights.

Life boats

Life boats (pinhole)

Date: December 7, 2014

It’s World Pinhole Day and I am out taking photos with a couple of cameras.

I took this shot last December beside the replica of The Pilgrim — the ship that Dana sailed around the Cape Horn. The day was overcast but clear.

I built the camera — a P-Sharan STD — from a kit and used Kentmere film to test it because it was cheap. I was pleased with the results. I am probably using Ilford today.

World Pinhole Day

Today is World Pinhole Day and you can bet that I will be out using my two pinhole cameras — a P-Sharan STD and a Pinhole Blender — to capture what I see. Here is a pinhole that I took last December on Solstice:

Griffith Park Observatory (pinhole)

Date: December 21,2014

The Griffith Park Observatory is always a good spot to visit and take photographs despite the hordes of tourists. I miscalculated and chose Winter Solstice for our short trip. Parking was a bear and we ended up near the bottom of the hill which I did not regret because of the exercise.

The day was overcast which was good because I was shooting with Kentmere 100. One guy asked me if the paper camera that I had made was a light meter. I finished the roll.

This particular shot pleased me because it was a good picture of the observatory and planetarium. The motion blur of people heading towards it was a bonus.
