Alan is one of a group of my friends who checked out the Great Park in Irvine a couple of months back. He is what he looks like — a bit of a beach philosopher though I don’t know that he goes there much.

What better fool to feature on April Fool’s Day than myself?
Cloning involves taking several pictures of myself in a scene. You set the camera on a tripod, adjust the exposure and the focus, then pose yourself or your model in several different places. When you are done, you begin pasting layers one by one, keeping the newest layer in the background. You then erase the part of the background that contains the new person. I find it best to start with the rear-most figure in the foreground and then work my way forward, merging each new figure as I complete them until I am done.

The visit to her hogan was part of a tour. I was overwhelmed by her dress — why can’t more of us wear such bright colors? To take this photo, I literally got down on my knees (I am 6′ 6 1/2″).
Her expression seems to change every time I look at it. Sometimes she is laughing as if she is sharing a joke, something grimacing in pain at yet another tourist taking her picture.

I found this gem next to the parking lot in Limestone Canyon Wilderness Park. The flowers are blooming earlier than usual this year. In a few weeks, this patch will be brown and forgotten.
I shot it with a 200mm lens.

We were in Miami for a Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance conference. By some stroke of luck, we were given a room on the 14th floor with this view of the city. I accidentally double-exposed it, but I don’t think it hurts the shot.
The camera I used here was a Lomography Sprocket Rocket which was based on the Dick Tracy cameras of the late 1940s. You get these wide photos that take up the space of two negatives. This is one of the cameras that I like to take on trips because it is light and easy to use.

I found this Southern Pacific Rattlesnake sunning himself on the sidewalk. After a few minutes, he decided to move across the road. I helped him by waving cars off. When he got to the other side, he had this obstacle to surmount.
I have to confess to a soft spot for rattlesnakes. They are gentle creatures when left undisturbed and will warn you if they can of their presence. Plus rattlesnakes eat the rats that carry the plague. Yes, we have plague in these parts.
I knew a guy once who kept rattlesnakes as pets. He raised captive populations which he then released back into the wild. He invited me to come over and hold them, but I declined. I am not that fond and trusting of these pit vipers.

Went for a hike with the Southern California Photo Explorers into a section of Limestone Canyon that is currently closed to the public.

No one in bathing suits this day — wind was blowing hard. A week later, the climate was temperate.
I love the afternoon colors. This is better than Golden Hour in my opinion.
This was one of my first photos taken with my Lomography Fisheye Number 2. The model was preparing for a Halloween shoot — the makeup artist is in the back. I think it makes for a better photo than it would have been without the artist looming in the background.
I took this through a plastic sandwich bag to give it a dreamy effect. The location is a small nature preserve near the City of Irvine.
