In honor of Memorial Day, let me introduce you to one of my favorite early photos. I found this cherub in Colma’s Italian Cemetery. Darkness was falling, so I had to resort to a flash. (I had the bad habit of sleeping until 3 in the afternoon those days.) My flash failed me on the first shot. All I got was a black silhouette. But this second image, though grainy, came out more to my liking.
